R. Mark Stowe is a nutritionist licensed by the Florida Board of Medicine in addition to being the owner of Nutrition Cottage, Inc. for over 30 years which is the oldest family owned and independent natural foods business in south Florida.
Wholesome is a service for families who want to eat and live more healthfully, but don't know where to start. Through both a mom's point of view and a reporter's approach to sifting through the often confusing health and nutrition information, the Wholesome mission was sparked: to make healthy living simple, affordable and flexible enough to suit every family's unique needs.
I am Allie Black, a former television anchor and medical reporter. I embraced a "clean," organically inclined lifestyle 15 years ago. Even after growing up with a licensed nutritionist parent and a family health food retail business, it took a personal health issue and what I learned covering the health beat to finally convince me take control of my own health. I discovered through my research that the best way to do that was two-fold: I had to commit to being active every day and I had to control what I put in and on my body. The birth of my children only deepened my commitment to reducing my family's exposure to processed and hormone laden foods, chemical compounds in fruits and vegetables, household supplies and body care products. Rooted in my faith and study about the "clean" way God intended us to live, it's empowering to know that I may not be able to control everything we encounter out in the world, but in my home, I'm in charge.
My success in mitigating the terrible symptoms of my auto-immune disease and my son's food allergies and intolerances proved what I suspected; I may not be a doctor, but I can be proactive, do the research and make a difference in my family's health.
Clean Living. Healthy Families
I am a real-world wife and mother, and as such, live what I like to call an "80/20" lifestyle. That is, 80 % of the time we eat all organic/natural foods. Everything, from what we put in our mouths , to dishwasher detergent, fabric softeners, bath soap and other skin care products is free of chemicals and harmful ingredients. The other 20% of the time we eat out just like you do and enjoy life's guilty pleasures outside the home including ice cream, BBQ, pizza, Mexican, take-out, fast food, etc. Because remember, it's not the "little stuff" we do wrong occasionally that matters; it's the big stuff we do routinely everyday that adds up.
At home, our foods are fun and delicious and not even my children's friends complain. It's my mission to find the "cool" item they see on TV and in friend's lunch boxes - cookies, ice cream, donuts, hot dogs, sports drinks, juice boxes, chips, gummies, etc. - but in a healthy form and for a fair price. Don't be blue if your child has been diagnosed with a food intolerance, allergy or disorder; I've been there, done that, and I am excited to share through my services a fun recipe for success.
Small changes. Big Impact.
I want to help you make this same lifestyle accessible and affordable. You don't have to start from scratch, because I've done the work for you. Don't waste another dollar at the store "trying to be healthy" only to come home and realize your family can't stand what you brought home. Let me do it for you-I guarantee I can find a healthy, inexpensive alternative to any mainstream treat or meal that you love. Small changes really do add up. After countless hours helping my friends figure out how to make changes that fit their families, I knew my passion was empowering other moms. That's why I launched Wholesome. Every family is different, so I meet you where you are, listen to your goals and deliver a plan to help you lead your family to better health.
Genesis 1:29-30 Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground-everything that has the breath of life in it-I give every green plant for food." And it was so.
